Saturdays with Flowers
“If joy is growing by the path, wear it.” ~Goodmoodism
Every Saturday, we hiked with flowers in our hair, a small ritual of friendship, nature, and joy that taught me how a simple tradition can bring connection, laughter, and meaning to everyone around.
Back in early 2020, when the world grew quiet and we all lived a little more indoors than out, I found my joy outside.
Every Saturday, one of my best friends, N., and I had a ritual: coffee to go from our favorite café, then hours of hiking. Sometimes three, sometimes seven.
Yes, seven hours. We’ll save that story for another post.
But the heart of it wasn’t just the walking. It was the flowers.
Each week, we searched for something, a bloom, a leaf, a sprig of green, and tucked it into our hair. No matter the season, there was always something waiting to be found.
Sometimes we found it right away.
Sometimes it took a while. We would stop, look around, point at things, disagree on what was “good enough,” laugh, and keep searching until we found the one that felt right.
Once we had our flowers, the hike officially began. We laughed, we walked, we snapped photos of our silly, beautiful crowns. It was light, playful, a little childlike, and maybe that’s what made it so good.
The funny thing? Our habit didn’t just change our hikes. It changed the people around us.
Strangers smiled. Some offered compliments. Older people would say, “We used to do that.” Little girls tugged at their parents’ sleeves, whispering that they wanted flowers too.
A small thing, really, a flower in your hair. But it was contagious in the best way.
I still do it to this day. Not always with flowers. Sometimes just a pretty leaf.
Because why not? Why not carry a little beauty with you, in the simplest, most visible way?
And every time I do, it reminds me of those Saturdays.
Just a sweet reminder that joy is everywhere, and sometimes, it belongs in our hair.
With a pretty smile,
